Artist Statement
The central idea of my concentration is how the human body is connected to nature. We as humans are
constantly surrounded by the beauty of nature and often do not see how we are connected with it. My art
is to help people open their eyes to the beauty that we hold within and to appreciate the beauty that
surrounds us.
When I first began to work I used graphite pencils to create the bones and acrylic paint to make the
flowers. But as time went on I began to explore different parts of the body besides bones such, as the
heart and the eye, and found it harder to use just those two materials. For these I began to use pastel
pencils, which I grew to like more the the graphite and acrylic. I began to really explore ways I could
connect the body to nature, since I hadn’t planned out each of these concentrations in detail. I moved the
plants/flowers in different ways, trying to make art that appealed to the eye and help viewers to connect
them with things they have seen in real life.
